The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

"Oh no. I haven’t seen The Curse of the Golden Flower yet, but I loved Hero and didn’t think it was overwrought."

I see. Well definitely see CotGF, its yummy good. Not quite Hero and it drags a little but once you get whats going on (which admittedly took me two watch-thru's) it doesn't seem to drag so much. Its more that the plot set up seems to take a while, thats all really.

I've avoided the trailer for this because I want to experience the visuals in the theater for the first time. The jury really is out on this, isn't it? I'm starting to get worried, but I'll still see it at first chance.

So with your first impression being, “some of the fantastical visuals turned me off … it reeked of artistry run a muck.” does that mean [to you] movies like Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower are vomitous piles of artistic doo-doo?

Oh no. I haven't seen The Curse of the Golden Flower yet, but I loved Hero and didn't think it was overwrought. It's just that some of the visuals in this trailer looked lavish to the point of being cartoonish when I first watched it. I'm definitely going to see it though ... hopefully on the big screen.

Luke, I remember thinking about Dali a lot when I watched Pan's Labyrinth. You're right: this looks even more like his work.

Dude...this is totally Dali. And given that Disney is likely to never make good on their promise to release Destino on DVD, this might have to do. Count me in.

Revising the comments section and making it more user friendly is on the docket for future revisions. You know, when I can get around to it. :)

I'd give this a shot. There are few too many ambitious films in Hollywood, and I'd rather see an ambitious failure than a safe success (actually, that depends more on my mood at the time, but you get what I mean).

Pushing Daisies was very awesome. I do hope it makes a comeback.

I didn't like The Cell, I could watch it again being a little older and a little wiser and might change my mind, but if my memory serves me well it just made me sleepy. That being said, this movie looks like it might be trying to deliver something bigger than maybe the actors can deliver, but the movie looks intriguing and I am no less willing to watch it.

The story looks great and gives me the same feeling as Pans Labyrinth, or even something like The Never Ending Story or The Princess Bride. That could have to do with the way the story is told of course.

So with your first impression being, "some of the fantastical visuals turned me off … it reeked of artistry run a muck." does that mean [to you] movies like Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower are vomitous piles of artistic doo-doo?
