TRAILER PARK: Coraline, The Happening, Doomsday
Tasty treats this week in the trailer park: little girls with creepy dolls in 3D, mystical rapture-like disappearances, and mashed-up apocalyptic mind benders. Enjoy.
Coraline
Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and I instantly fell in love with Coraline when I read it years ago. It’s a children’s fairy tale with bite: not too scary for a child of 10, but not tame enough to remove all fears. The director of The Nightmare Before Christmas tackles this one, with Teri Hatcher and Dakota Fanning doing the voices. And its in 3D! (not the trailer, but the film) Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy….
The Happening
The Happening
The phrase “By the Director of Lady in the Water” does not tend to fill one with an immediate sense of confidence. Rest assured, the marketing team behind M. Night’s latest will not be using that as a tag line, and despite his sullied track record of late, this one is shaping up to look really, really good. Perhaps a return to form for the Sixth Sense auteur? One can only hope (just don’t cast yourself as a writer who will save the world, ok M. Night? OK??!?!?!).
Doomsday
Doomsday
This one may not appeal to many of you, but I find it fascinating. Director Neil Marshall’s previous effort was The Descent, which I consider to be one of the top 10 horror films of the last decade. From the trailer, Doomsday appears to be a combination of 28 Days Later, the Mad Max trilogy, The Running Man, and Gladiator, and if you think I’m exaggerating even in the slightest, see for yourself.

A friend of mine worked as a production assistant in Cape Town on Doomsday. From what he’s told me and what I’ve seen, it looks like a definate watch. A good bit of action by the sounds of things.

Hey Chris, thanks for stopping by. I have a review of Doomsday posted here. I was a big fan of it — it was just a bunch of dumb, fun, action, and I had a great time. My wife, however, hated it, which prompted me to knock my star rating down to three (instead of the three-and-a-half or four that I probably would have given it otherwise). It’s worth checking out if you’re willing to check your brain at the door and soak in the cheesy B-movie goodness.
