The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I missed a couple of titles there... some things Howard Chaykin did were excellent, in my opinion...and 100 bullets, for example has, for me, some of the best crime stories in the las few years...Jonny Double, by Azzarello too, is another great noir story, in both the art of Eduardo Risso is just amazing... There is also a weakness of mine...Spanish classic Torpedo 1936, in my opinion a masterpiece of the genre, and of comic art in general... On the other hand I´m glad to find Sleeper (absolutely agree Miss Misery is one of the greatest femme fatales in history) Criminal, and Fell...

Another great noir type GN I read some time ago, and I can't seem to find again; Black Sad, or Blacksad, however it's written. Anthropomorphic detective story written well and very well drawn. Overall very well presented. I believe it was released in french originally, but translations are available as it was re-released last year sometime.

I liked this list with one exception, the lack of Hellboy, which I find a great noir-based comic.

Ok, I can see we're on the same page there. I need to track down all of those titles and give them a look-see. Maybe I can bribe my library to order them up.

Evan, I have to say that none of that stuff bothered me. I absolutely love that volume - Bullseye and The Punisher in prison...priceless. But I read very, very few regular superhero runs for the exact same reasons; repetitive soap opera elements in which nothing changes. Brubaker's Daredevil only gets worse from there. But the art and the dialogue keep me buying those volumes...I could just look at the pictures and still be happy.

Criminal, Scene of the Crime, Sleeper, and Gotham Central (the other Brubaker stuff on this list) do not suffer from that problem. They all represent Brubaker working with characters he can change and kill. I don't know about Brubaker's Catwoman (I recommended it but haven't read it!!) but my understanding is that it doesn't suffer from those problems anywhere near as much as Daredevil.

Ok, so I did read the first Brubaker Daredevil run, where Murdock is in the slammer along with Kingpin. The art is really great, quite noirish, and I enjoyed the writing, but there were the typically soap-operish leaps of narrative logic in it that always bug me. So after Daredevil and Kingpin are in prison, they wheel Bullseye AND The Punisher in as well? And there are guards who are so corrupt they are willing to let inmates into the arms locker? REALLY? A lot of it feels quite contrived, which bugs me. That's why I typically don't read the standard super hero runs, simply because they're stuck in a constant loop, the same kinds of loops that soap operas are stuck in.

Yeah, that's rough. I doubt you would regret spending $15 bucks on Fell or Desolation Jones, but after that these suckers get pricey. I mean Criminal is only $15, but if you buy that first volume, I imagine you'll be hooked. As I probably indicated, none of these books had great odds to be in the library except for the Miller stuff.

I own most of this stuff and could lend it to you, if it were not for that geography thing. Maybe next time I'm in Wichita...

So I checked my library thoroughly. Other than the usual suspects, they don't have any of the titles I haven't read.

My library usually doesn't let me down, but it did this time.

I don't know if anyone will ever read this comic, but a new noirish comic just got it's first issue released on the web. It's called Urban Myths and follows a gorgon gumshoe in a mythological world. I thought it was pretty good.

100 Bullets just isn't for me, but you're right that it was an oversight not to even include it under a "You Might Also Like" tag.

The real one I regret is Scalped. I just totally forgot about it when I was writing it up. A kung fu American Indian noir hero named Dashiell Bad Horse? How could I have forgotten it! As with Fell, you can get the first issue online:

Personally I think that Fell is worse than Preacher. But I could also imagine someone coming down on the other side. In Fell, the fucked-up ness is pretty pervasive. Even Fell's girlfriend decides it's a good idea to improvise a branding iron and brand Fell's neck. And someone has feces injected into them.

That said, it's a great comic - it's the one that got me back interested in comics after a fallow period of a couple of years.

The only ones I have read on here are "Sin City" and, of course, the two Batman titles (who hasn't). But I am incredibly eager to check out a few of the others.

I think "Fell" is the one I am most interested in. It can't be any worse than "Preacher" was, can it?

Wow Evan, you really have turned this into a glorious-looking piece. I particularly like the picture you chose for Desolation Jones; spoiler alert: the man in question touches him again.

I led off with Miller on both lists, but I'm going to make a recommendation now. If you like noir and Batman, or just Batman, buy or borrow or steal the Miller Batman comics immediately. But if you're just looking for a noir story, I would get Criminal as fast as possible. Sin City is the king of noir comics, but it's also so violent and out of control that it turns a lot of people off. Whereas Criminal is so restrained and pitch-perfect that I don't know anyone who's read it and not liked it.
