Theater Releases for August 6th, 2008

By Luke Harrington

Don’t ask me why these are being released on Wednesday. Come to think of it, don’t ask me why these are being released at all.

Pineapple Express
Yep…another stoner comedy…about stoners…acting…like…stoners. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited. In other news, Judd Apatow has gone from Critical Darling to Annoying Has-Been Flavor-of-the-Month in a short year. The only question is, how long before he’s joined in the Bin of Irrelevance by J.J. Abrams? I’m taking bets!

Recommended if you didn’t learn your lesson from Drillbit Taylor. Or You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Or Step Brothers. Or…

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
…All they could come up with was “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2? Really? We don’t even get “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Requiem“? Or maybe “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Book of Secrets“? Or how about “Abbot and Costello Meet the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants“? Or — and this is my favorite — “Divine Secrets of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ Diary: The Edge of Reason“? Seriously Hollywood, you guys have been slapping 2’s on the end of things since that sequel to The Godfather (what was that one called, again?) — you can do better. By the way, though, I love the tagline for this one: “This summer the girls are back.” Inspired. (And, I might add, nicely punctuated.)

Recommended if you’ve already watched all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls 96 times and desperately need more Alexis Bledel.

Pineapple Express is directed by David Gordon Green, you know. It’s the only reason I’m holding out for it. He’s got some mad directing skills.

Great blip on Traveling Pants. Care for a double feature with Mamma Mia?

Don’t hold out too much, Phillip. There might be moments that somewhat-kind-of-maybe-could-be evidence of Green as a director, but they are few and far between. This is, first and foremost, a stoner film. With action. Beyond that it’s not much else.

Yes indeed, as Luke laments: “Why?” This is an unmitigated trash lineup.

Look, I haven’t seen Pineapple yet, and Evan has, but I’m psyched about this movie. Seth Rogen can do no wrong.

I also still believe in Apatow. There’s obviously an Apatow continuum: movies he only produces with more mainstream figures like Ferrell and Sandler are going to be weaker. Movies he writes and directs, chock full of Freaks and Geeks, are going to rate among my favorite movies.

And movies like Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and (hopefully) Pineapple Express are not going to ascend to the challenging heights of social commentary of Knocked Up, but I expect them to be funny and have something on their minds. Sure, Pineapple Express could break that streak, but I’m optimistic.

You’ll probably be pleased, then, G. You seem to have your expectations in the right place. It is a very entertaining movie, just not anymore than the “stoner action film” label would suggest. I’m not really into stoner films, so all of that was lost on me.

    You and me both, Evan.

I admire your optimism, G, but PE really has nothing of value on its mind.

Well Daniel, two response to that:

1.I’ll probably still enjoy it if it has nothing on its mind. I liked Dude Where’s My Car, although I certainly greatly prefer the socially observant Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle.

2.Do you think Superbad had anything on its mind? The first time I didn’t think it did, but repeat viewings have been rewarding.

Dang dude!! Way to lay it down. I like it! :)

But don’t you at least wanna look at Blake Lively for a little bit??

And I think you may be frontin’ a bit, cuz Evan and Coosa Creek Rick told me you cried in the first one when that little girl dies of Leukemia.

    It’s true, it’s true!

Okay…so I just had to hit up Wikipedia, because I had no idea that Blake Lively is the name of an actress in Sisterhood, and I also had no idea that the plot of the first involved leukemia. So I learned a couple of things today. :) Thanks guys.

OMG… u didnt know that Blake Lively was her name? She’s totally popular now b/c of Gossip Girl!

Either Luke is pulling my leg or he doesn’t have a wife/girlfriend/whatever that leaves US and People issues lying around the house. Either way… I’m kind of impressed.

BTW…It’s ok that I know this info about Ms. Lively b/c she is turning 21 on August 25th. I mean… right???

Oh, I have a wife…it’s just that she has taste. :)

Julia does have taste, AND you guys don’t watch TV. If you watched TV, you’d know about Gossip Girl. There’s just no way around it. And no, I’ve never seen it, but I’m pretty sure I gag every time I see an ad. So it’s memorable like that. :)

And, Luke, you’re totally right about the title. Even the book had a slightly more interesting title. OK, not that interesting. But still.

If you need more Alexis Bledel, you should watch Sin City. There’s a lot of her in that, if you catch my drift heh heh.

Okay…actually she’s probably the most clothed person in that movie…

When I reviewed Sin City, I think I actually referred to her character as “Rory Gilmore in fishnets.”
