As in, his disappearance wasn't really supernatural to begin with, but was her own fault? Hmmm...I guess you could say that is original, but its not a huge change from the standard formula. All of the major trappings - the house, the creepy kids, the mysterious disappearance - have been done before ad nauseum. A screenwriting friend once said that a cliche is not a cliche when it works, so while The Orphanage is built upon cliches, its not cliched in the slightest. I don't want to spoil it for those that haven't seen it, but there's a certain catch (revealed during the a-ha moment) to The Orphanage that really made it for me.
