The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Nice one, Phillip ... I think you may be right, that Ed Crane is the Coens' most sympathetic character. Maybe because as a "witness," a "watcher," he is the closest to that part of the brothers' collective stance as anyone?

I just yesterday posted a review of the film <a href="http://coosacreek.org/mambo/2008/04/22/review-the-man-who-wasnt-there/" rel="nofollow">here,</a> if you're interested.

Nice review. I gotta say that I think Fargo had a heart--perhaps more than this film. I was unsettled by Ed's lack of emotion throughout the film (with the exception of his apparent affection for music). He doesn't bat an eye when he finds out his wife killed herself, and it's his fault. I was certainly intrigued by the film and wondered where those crazy Coens were taking me as the viewer. But I never really felt a pulse, which gave me the same vibe as reading Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. There is confusion, there are just desserts, but there is no heart in it. More apathy than anything. (Except the music...)

Great write-up!

I have been meaning to revisit this film for quite some time (I didn't like it the first time I saw it in theaters), and your review just pushed me over the edge.
Thanks!
