The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I really enjoyed this piece of your writing. It was a good description of post-modernity and its all-encompassing influence on culture. I also wondered briefly about the apolyptic character of Lenny Smalls, but I can see that the Coen brothers have really evolved in their craft since Raising Arizona (though it is still one of my favorites). I think that Lenny Smalls was a really in-your-face character and it seems that the Coens are now leaning more toward subtleness.

Well according to early buzz about their production of A Serious Man here:

"Joel and Ethan Coen's 'A Serious Man' will shoot in the Twin Cities this fall, partly because of the snowbate and partly because the brothers have always been committed to shooting their films on the locations where they're set.
'I took them to Temple Israel and their eyes teared up. They were remembering all the bar mitzvahs they went to there,' Shapiro said. "

Dunno what that exactly means, but I would say look for the film to be one of their most personal.

Daniel -- Interesting about their Jewish background ... anybody know if they're practicing Jews?

Pat, I think the Coens may have evolved over the years between "Fargo" and "No Country" ... Thus, perhaps, the more bleak "No Country" might reflect that evolution ... also, I think that the current, um, political climate might have something to do with it.

Evan, of course you're right ... Smalls is emblematic of disorder, chaos, etc. ... probably I didn't consider it because, rightly or wrongly, we don't take "comedies" as seriously. Not a good idea with the Coens.

Thank you all for your gracious comments. They mean a lot.

(P.S. do you all remember the old "Get Smart" TV show, where the global bad guy organization, out to rule the world, was called "Kaos"?)

Great article, Rick, but you missed the third member of the Coens triumvirate of post-modern evil and chaos: Lenny Smalls, the Lone Biker of the Apocalypse. In fact, he's nearly the same character as Anton Chigurh (they both carry larger than life weapons, they both speak with a disturbing calmness, and they both execute small woodland creatures for the fun of it). The only difference - the ONLY one - is that Smalls is played for laughs while Chigurh is not. Part of the humor is that they allow H.I. to kill him, but Smalls is just as implacable an enemy, operating on his own twisted internal logic.

One of the things I admire about the Coens is their consistency. You can easily trace No Country all the way back to Raising Arizona and Blood Simple. Their production values have gotten slicker, but they're the same two filmmakers that started out over 2 decades ago.

Again, great article Rick.

I originally felt the same way, Pat. Perhaps the Coens thought about doing something like that with NCFOM, but it would have bastardized McCarthy's novel.

Excellent write-up here, Reverend Rick. Thanks for the insight.

Wonderful article, Rick.

I especially appreciate the parallels and contrasts you make between "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men." I feel I may be a bit like the pastor you spoke to, because my recurring thought after seeing "No Country" was that it suffered for the lack of a Marge Gunderson-like character could remind us "There's more to life than a little bit of money." I wanted a moral point of view expressed somewhere in the film, and got none. Call me old-fashioned, I guess.

Wow, a really magnificent piece of writing here, Rick. Gave me a new insight into especially Fargo and No Country. I wonder how the Coen's Jewish upbringing factors into all of this.

Nice work.
