Yeah, I wouldn’t call it a must-see. It’s just a very good genre picture. I found it beautiful and moving…obviously, other people haven’t. Do with that what you will.

I don’t know WHAT the deal is with this movie and me. The subject matter is right up my alley and I like Rhys-Meyers, but I for some reason had NO desire to see it. You’ve made me reconsider, but it STILL it doesn’t seem like a must-see. Weird.

I think that was the comment you left on Fool’s Gold. That does sound just a teeeeeensie bit regretful.

And agreed on the difficulty of reviewing films that aren’t particularly ambitious. It is so much easier to write on films that elicit strong reactions – whether they be positive or negative – than on films that elicit indifferent shrugs.

This one was hard to rate (and review, for that matter), as I felt it wasn’t particularly ambitious — but what it did, it did quite well. I certainly didn’t feel like it deserved most of the vitriol that a lot of reviewers were slinging at it. If I could have given it 3.75, I would have.

I don’t remember expressing regret over Fool’s Gold.

I imagine this will be a 4 star rating that you’ll somewhat regret in the future and wish it was instead a 3 or a 3.5 (much like you’ve expressed with “Fool’s Gold”).

I’ll have to catch this on DVD – you’ve intrigued me.

I will say that I think Rhys-Myers is a fantastic actor. I haven’t seen him in August Rush or this one, but I imagine his performance might be diminished overall by the quality of the film. Watch him in Match Point or see his portrayal as King Henry the VIII in Showtime’s The Tudors and you might form a different opinion of his acting chops. He is so electric in Match Point that your hair crackles from watching him.
