The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I concur with Sam - great piece, Luke, and very insightful into the thinking that goes into making films like this.

I'm currently reading Primo Levi's "Survival in Auschwitz." People should just read that book, rather than see movies like this.

"do we need another patronizing film to tell us this?"

And that's it in a nutshell. I wrote a review of it too, and I'm completely with you and Nick on this film, Luke. You are quite right to say that the problem is not with the filmaking (which I agree with you is "gorgeous") but with the story, which you rightly say is unoriginal-paraphrased-and hollow.

And I would venture to suspect that you are right again when you say that this probably worked much better as an allegory (in the novel) rather than this realistic on screen presentation.

Terrific review, you are really coming into your own as of late, Luke as a critic. Top-rank.

Yep, completely onboard with you here, especially on the fact that the allegorical elements of the story just didn’t not work in the film, they were too realistic. I still thought the ending was powerful though, even if it was rather obviously moralistic. Vera Farmiga was excellent, she gave me chills.
