The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I complimented Alexander at his CCC site for his third masterpiece for the Movie Zeal series, and one that winds up his tryptich of penultimate scholarly examinations of film noir landmarks. Of course, THE BIG COMBO is a vernerable blend of the gangster and police thriller genres within the artsitic sensibilities of standard noir elements. But this one had an unforgettable jazz score by David Raskin, that launched a two decades cinematic obsession with music as an integral filmic device to enhance theme.

With hours of meticulous writing, all in his inimitable, flowing and descriptive (and passionate)style, Alexander Coleman has done the absolute limit of what one can do with this assignment, redefining noir as a force in American cinema, while at the same time presenting analytical insights into films that have rarely received such loving and reverential devotion.

You'll have to take the star rating of Sweet Smell of Success up with Luke, Ari. Haha.

Thank you very much, Ari. It was a judgment call, but I tried to give this ****1/2--I think the 1/2 got eaten up in the email to Evan. Probably my fault. I just notified him. So that will put it closer to ***** for you.

Thank you again. And thank you, Evan, for the terrific opportunity that these reviews brought for everyone in the orbit of Movie-Zeal. As Ari says, I think August's look at noir here has been a great success.

Great great review. This is a five-star classic for me, but I'm a bit crazy for all things Richard Conte. Really brilliant analysis, Alex.

Really, guys, you've all outshined the rest of the online film world with this series. Amazing work.

Unless Sweet Smell of Success is rated below 5 stars tomorrow. Then I take it all back! (kidding, of course)
