But your view (to your credit) wasn't snooty or backhanded--you made your criticism (launched by that most apt politician comparison)and went on to say that within the confines of its genre and popular entertainment, it paid back some modest dividends. As long as it was only trying to be a light comedy, it was enormously fun. When it tried to make serious points, though, that only served to show how facile the whole thing was (for me at least). For me, the film ultimately had more to do with the personal redemption of its characters than it had to do with presenting answers to the political issues it raised; I actually liked that I couldn't tell from watching what the filmmaker's personal political views were. I'd agree that it isn't a terribly deep film, but it was beautifully written, acted, and directed, and enormously entertaining. I actually loved “Swing Vote,” even though I seem to be alone in that position.
