The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Probably. The Hays Codes all but mandated happy endings. :)

Agreed about Soylent Green. Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi flicks.

Not a huge fan of the food, however. I just feel like the taste of people overwhelms the "green" flavor. Am I right?

Well, I understand. Even wrote about it on my blog. Cotton and Robinson -- and Chuck Connors!

But wasn't SHADOW OF A DOUBT's ending altered?

But no good comes from misusing Joseph Cotten.

Ever.

By the way, am I the only person alive who knows that Joseph Cotten is in Soylent Green? I can't seem to find anyone else who understands how awesome it is that Soylent Green has Joseph Cotten and Edward G. Robinson.

Plus, its just great.

You're probably right, G -- I was a bit annoyed at the love story myself, but it never even crossed my mind when I was writing this review. I think I'm just predisposed to love everything Hitchcock did.

Also: +1 for referencing one of my favorite Ebert books.

I have to say, I hated, hated, hated this movie. I'll leave most of my complaints for my Film Ignorance entry.

But how do you justify such a stupid and tacked on love story? It was like Suspicion all over again:

Scene One: Two people meet
Scene Two "Oh Darling! I remember the first time I knew I loved you (aka, yesterday)"
Scene Three: I roll my eyes.

Good point, FDr. I guess I took this one to be a melodrama wrapped inside a noir, and rolled with the mannerisms. Even with those complaints, though, it's still not a bad film.

You didn't mention that Shadow of a Doubt has one of Hitchcock's more disappointing, and unlikely endings. Also, Teresa Wright's acting style seems too mannered and earnest. Hitchcock may not have known Americans well enough to depict their family life convincingly.
