The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I agree with you about the rating system. It's extremely antiquated and in desperate need of an overhaul. At the same time, though, I think it's important to pay attention to reasons the MPAA provides for the ratings they give out. This one is rated PG "for scary creature action and violence, peril and some thematic elements" -- a more-or-less accurate description of this film (though I probably would have added "gore" to this one, had they asked my opinion). Put simply, the ratings have a lot of issues, but they can be useful if you know how to work with them.

But yeah. I really can't recommend this film, to anyone. I have no idea who they had in mind when they made it.

I could not agree more with you. Excellent review. This move was a huge mistake on our part and I felt like I failed my kids by not watching it before deciding to show it to them. There are simply no warnings about the disastrously violent scenes until you find yourself immersed in one.

This movie is a perfect example of why movie ratings should not be trusted. One would not expect a PG movie to have a scene of a 9 year old stabbing his own father in the chest with a kitchen knife. There are parts of the movie that belong in a carnage move like Friday 13th or worse. Blood color stained walls, family stabbing and mutilating goblins coming into the house from the floor and windows are all too common. The plot is absolutely non existent.

If you decide to show this movie to your toddlers or tweens you are almost certainly going to traumatize them. Be ready for some major damage control following the viewing.

Awesome review, man. I how you combine your personal views with your critical ones in a way that isn't preachy or overbearing.

Guess I was right about this one (see the theater release post). I wonder when Hollywood will figure out that Harry Potter and Narnia are the only 2 children's series worth adapting into tentpole franchises?
