The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Thanks for the comment, Mark. This one is really on my radar, although I haven't seen it yet. People either really love it, or they feel it was heavyhanded. I haven't seen too many middle-of-the-fence comments on it.

I have to agree with Fletch. This was an enjoyable and well done movie but it could have been near-perfect if they had reduced the Saccharine level and controlled the Hallmark factor. The concept of the whole town getting involved blew it. Wasn't necessary. Wasn't believable. For example, the funeral, what can I say--give me a break... nobody had $10,000 to spend on a funeral on a doll to please this guy. And they wouldn't have spent it if they did.

I read a great comment from <a href="http://redison.wordpress.com" rel="nofollow">a friend of mine</a> on this film today that really put it into a different perspective for me:

<blockquote>"It's less about Lars' sex doll, and more about you and YOUR sex doll. Because you do have one, whether you know it or not."</blockquote>

Ehh, I don't know. It worked for me. I recognize that people don't always act like that, but I have seen firsthand the redemption that can come when people DO. It's rare this day and age and especially rare in a stagnated church climate, but the power is still there. I think that's why I like the film so much.

As much as I agree with you often, this film blew it. The setup was good and yes, they avoided making the characters or plot jokes, but they went so far overboard with how "loving" the community was that the syrup drowned me. It might have worked a lot more had it stayed focused on Lars' family. I don't care how sweet and midwesterny his town was, it just reeked of a Hallmark card.
