The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Perhaps I was just reacting too strongly to Farrell finally playing a part that wasn't just pretty-boy-heroic-lead. Alexander was a colossal miscalculation, primarily because Farrell was cast. Here, it's like I realized for the first time that he's actually a decent actor. That realization may have overpowered any minor weaknesses to the performance.

But I do agree with your assessment of Fiennes, Rick. And you forgot to mention Lord Voldemort in your list of his accomplishments.

Even though I only gave this film 3 1/2 stars, I keep thinking back to it over and over and over. It has stuck with me the way other films have not. Martin McDonagh is a talent to watch, methinks. Hopefully he is more than a one trick pony (ala Guy Ritchie, who has one movie and one movie only in his system) and will come out with some truly outstanding work in the future.

I finally saw this, as well ... I thought Farrell was good enough, but just a little too overtly, act-y, twitchy ... like look at me, I'm a guy who just shot a kid. A bit mannered, I guess I mean.

Now, Ralph Fiennes ... there's an actor. The same guy who played the grieving husband in "The Constant Gardener," Charles Van Doren, Amon Goeth in Schindler's list, and now this lizard-eyed gangster who loves his kids. Superb!

The scene in the cafe, where Colin Farrell ends up punching that woman, was hilarious. I love comedy that takes risks like that and gets away with them.

I remember liking this film, but all that's left of it are the excessive midget jokes.

Not to rub it in, Nick, but you're missing out big time. I think it's grown on me in the months since I wrote this, and I would probably up the star rating by at least a half.
