The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Yeah Sam, I was telling my wife about the film, and I said something like "It's a refreshingly realistic rom-com," and she said "Oh, you mean its portrayal of the living dead is accurate?" and I realized that I wasn't thinking about that aspect of it at all. It really does say something about a high-concept film when it manages to make you (literally) forget its own high concept.

Christian, do check this one out. I think you'll enjoy it.

I completely agree that after about 30 minutes the situations in the film are played out with much believability, and that Ricky gervais amost effortlessly turns in a striking performance in the lead. there's an effervescent charm and strain of humor in the film that elevate it to a level far above respectability. I think you have accurately captured the components that made this seemingly formula film a suprise hit, and one of the year's most entertaining films.

I was surprised at how well this clocked in with the critics. I know you're a sucker for the rom-com, Luke, but I still would really like to see this. Gervais is a great British commodity. Hopefully he'll manage to pop in some financially successful films and stick around stateside.

Thanks Joel!

Yeah, this was a severely under-promoted film, which is too bad because it really is quite a gem. The trailer actually made me not want to see it, and I probably never would have if Paramount hadn't sent a screener my way.

If anyone is at all a fan of rom-coms or comic supernatural films, check it out.

Excellent review! I just saw this on DVD and I was actually shocked how much I liked it. Sure, the premise isn't original and the movie is somewhat predictable in its major plot points, but the acting, the dialogue, the cinematography, and the directing are top-notch work. I was really impressed by the supporting cast, who do some impeccable comedic work up against the talent of Gervais and Leoni. Kinnear really holds his own too. All three have excellent timing and great chemistry.

I'm going to be telling people about this movie and hopefully it will receive the following now that it was denied in theaters.
