The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Actually, the Kael comment was meant as a compliment, since Kael wrote that entire essay praising the merits of trash (which is, essentially, exactly what you were doing). She's right, you're right - sometimes a piece of 'likeable crap' is exactly what we need. Too many critics take that mightier-than-thou approach (Armond White, I'm looking at you) and bash 'n trash a film that isn't attempting to be anything more than a light piece of entertaining fluff. Sometimes an escapist film (like Jumper) descends so far into idiocy that it's impossible to let it off the hook, but many films (like Get Smart) are a good enough time that won't insult your intelligence (too much).

Oh, Evan, I enjoyed it. I had a good time. It was a pleasant two hours, for the most part. I have had far less enjoyable times in a movie theater.

It does sound a little like your Kael quote in the other thread, huh?

You're starting to sound a bit like Pauline Kael there, Bowen. :)

I like me some likeable crap. Sometimes you're brain just can't take that Van Sant film you know you need to watch, and you just want to shut off and have a reasonably stupid-free time of it.

Part of the trick of being a film critic is being able to distinguish between crap and likable crap. This is likable crap. A lot of that comes down to the cast, who made it a lot better than it should have been.

You're both pretty much on the money about this one, Christian & Rachel. It's a film that tries way too hard to be everything to everyone, but it gets enough of it right (plus Steve Carrell is appealing enough) that it manages to be a pretty fun time.

I have to say I will be avoiding this. It just looks like bland committee style filmmaking. And I love Arkin. Sorry about that, Chief.

I liked this one too. Though Steve Carrell has made some bad choices (Evan Almighty, anyone?) his humble charm keeps me coming back to the theater time after time. But God I hope they avoid sequels for this one.
