Comments on: DVD Releases for September 23rd, 2008

The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

My mouth was open the entire time I was watching the trailer for Carol. Who greenlit that thing? Who paid for it?

I have yet to see Team America. Marionette sex weirds me out.

An American Carol looks pretty bad. Cringeworthy. I'll probably check it out out of curiosity, though.

I think Team America has said enough about people like Moore to last us through a few more elections at least. That movie is still as prescient today as it was when it came out.

Hmmm... not a Michael Moore fan, Fox? Are you looking forward to him being lampooned in An American Carol? Or is that just painful filmmaking heaped on top of a painful foundation?

And bravo on acquiring the internets again, G. I can only imagine how terrifying it must have been down there in the dark with the Prehistoric Cave People.

I saw Foot Fist Way after the metacritic score was 63: nothing special but I fine way to spend an evening laughing. Plus the film was shot right outside my hometown.

It was not funny. And even McBride wasn't that funny, despite being the funniest part of both Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express not named Robert Downey Jr. So yeah, it looks like an amusing movie - to follow up one of your analogies, if Napoleon Dynamite got a spinoff following the martial arts instructor - but it's just not worth watching.

I actually heard Run Fatboy Run was ok but the title/concept confused the hell of out me. Run skinny boy run, right? I mean, am I taking crazy pills? Is Simon Pegg fat? Was he even fatted up in the movie (he looked thin as usual in the trailers)? Was I the only person bothered by this?

I wish Danny McBride would hop from your second DVD release of the week into the cover of your first and kick Michael Moore in the head.

You could engage in endless academic sparring over the objectivity of documentaries (all of them have an agenda, none are truly objective, etc.) but Michael Moore crosses some line from "documentary" into "opinion piece." I guess he's a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. I remember really loving Roger & Me, but that was before he became such an armchair lobbyist. And it really has nothing to do with his political views; for me, it's almost entirely his tone and the extent to which he manipulates people. I'm not saying I'm a big fan of the NRA or anything, but the way he ambushed Charlton Heston in Bowling for Columbine really left a foul taste in my mouth. It's difficult to trust anything in his films, in the same way it's difficult (nay, impossible) to trust reality television.

Yeah, lots of butt shots in Fatboy. But hey, maybe Simon Pegg is your dreamboat. I'd probably watch it again on TV just for his work here, as everyone else is pretty unforgettable. Well, Hank Azaria is decent. Eh, that's where I'll leave it.

I definitely preferred McBride in PE and TT over Foot Fist, but in hindsight I should have given him the credit for showing potential in it. I remember the scene in the kitchen where he argues with his wife as being pretty funny.

"I like my documentaries to make a solid run at objectivity"

Yeah, me too, but I fear we're in the minority.
