Sam, Eternal Sunshine really is a great moment for Carrey. I still haven’t gotten around to Man on the Moon — mainly because I was born too late to know anything about Andy Kaufman — but it is on my list.

Luke, Carrey is indeed underrated. His performances in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and MAN ON THE MOON are proof parcel. Great work there!

“Actually, this seems vaguely appropriate, given that the material is A Christmas Carol — a work that once bled Dickens’ sympathy for the underclass, but has been stripped of its politics, co-opted by the corporate establishment, mass-produced, and sold back to the poor each and every year in order to line Scrooge’s proverbial pockets — but, of course, that fact doesn’t make it bearable any more than a plastic, light-up baby Jesus reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas.”

Wow. I think that’s the most depressing sentence I’ve read in a long time. My roommate’s reaction: “Whoa. Rant much?”

Hey, you actually read the whole thing? I didn’t think anyone would.

Seriously, I banged this out and said “I really should cut about 800 words out of this…” but then I realized that this was a high-profile film that had already had its opening weekend, so I figured I’d just put the piece out there as is, and move on to more important things. So anyway, thanks for struggling through it.

Carrey really is an underrated actor, though, isn’t he? The quality of his performance always seems to depend on the caliber of director he’s working with, but he definitely has talent for much more than just making his butt talk.

Indeed Luke. Yet again we are completely on the same page as I also gave it 3 of 5, and likewise concede there are an even amount of strenghths and weaknesses. Yes, one issue is that the characters don’t look like real people, even if that was admittedly the game plan. It didn’t borrow a bit too liberally from the Alistair Sim version, which of course towers above it. But as always Carey was at least engaging. My kids thought it was OK, no more, which supports your later contention.
