The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

Who's Scott Cooper?

Tom Cobb wrote the perfect ending to Crazy Heart. In fact, Tom Cobb wrote the whole novel.

Although I did not love "Crazy Heart" the film (I can't forgive the director for monkeying with the perfect ending to Scott Cooper's novel), I loved what Jeff Bridges did with the character of Bad Blake. I simply cannot see anyone else playing that kind of layered, broken-down drunkard with more skill than Bridges. He reigns supreme among character actors, and he EARNED that Oscar. It wasn't a Lifetime Achievement Award; it was a merit award, plain and simple.

"There’s not one lackluster performance in Crazy Heart."

Indeed Phillip, indeed. Even Robert Duvall, whose brief appearance here recalls his own similar leading role in 1983's TENDER MERCIES, is memorable. But I enjoyed your highly-descriptive opening, when the Chevy Silverado pulls into a bare parking lot and the sentiment that Bridges hasn't been this impressive since his turn in THE BIG LEBOWSKI. (and before that I might add his smashing debut in Peter Bogdonovich's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.)

I like that parallel to THE WRESTLER and particularly this observation:

"The fruit of Bad’s struggle is not a new existence on flowery beds of ease, but a constant process of reconciling the past with the present in the hope of a renewed future. The painful thing about redemption, he finds, is that it comes at the price (and with all the pain) of total purification. The new songs he writes for Tommy all center around this process: “Whiskey has been a thorn in your side / and it doesn’t forget / the highway that calls for your heart inside.”
