The official podcast of MovieZeal.com, where film is always best discussed under the gentle influence of fine wine (as fine as $10 will get you). Each week Evan, Heather, and Luke pick a theme, discuss a theatrical release based on that theme, pop the cork and drink a wine that fits said theme, and finally subject one another to The Gauntlet, where forcing others to watch painful films nets you fabulous prizes. There is not anything else on the internets like it (literally).

I just finished Neil Gaiman's Newbery-Award winning THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, and I must say I liked even more than CORALINE, which I once used with fifth graders. Gaiman had some January and February with the simultaneous opening of the film version of CORALINE, and the American Library Association prize. I saw CORALINE last week with the family and was impressed, if a bit distanced in an emotional sense. This was not the feeling I prossessed with THE GRAVEYARD BOOK. I must agree completely with Luke and Even that the closing segment is flat. I enjoyed the 3D glasses and all, but for me that novelty has run its course.

Excellent review, and dead-on with the four-stars. I will be writing my own piece over the weekend, but yours sir is definitive.

I haven't read the book, but it's interesting that you and Evan feel the last 20 minutes are failing. To me, they were the highlight! Whether it was because the 3D was most obvious to me then or the pace just picked up, I really dug that finale (though I admit a video game comparison isn't too far off the mark).

I definitely agree, Ryan. It happened more than once for me that a perfect, wordless scene was almost ruined by the characters opening their mouths. I decided not to harp on that, though, because, as you say, it's a kids' film. There's definitely a lot to criticize if you want to be nitpicky; for me, though, this was all trumped by Selick's deft control of suspense, which is a rarity in this business.

Saw it tonight... was glad that the RealD seemed to work for me (astigmatism keeps me out of most red/blue 3D fare).

I enjoyed it overall. Interesting story, fun visuals... the screenwriter in me kept having to get over myself when the obvious was stated and repeated (yes, Ryan, this :is: a children's movie...).

Enjoyed the review, Luke. :)

Everyone needs to patronize this one ASAP. There are only a handful of digital theaters in the country, and most of them are committed to showing the new Jonas Brothers movie in three weeks.

Seriously.

Sounds like a tasty little success. Having read the book, and despite enjoying it immensely, I agree that the 3rd act felt... off. It's been a while since I read it, but "video game quest" seems to ring true with what I remember.

I hope this does well at the box office. You're right - we need more inventive children's pictures like this, and less of the factory issue CG-talking-animal flicks that inevitably dominate the box office (<I>Madagascar 2</i>....ughhhhhhh).
