This was one of the toughest films for me to review in quite a while for similar reasons that you mentioned. However, the skill with which the film was made is undeniably brilliant, and Michael Stuhlbarg is excellent.

Sy Ableman? I loved this movie! I hate to say it but it suddenly occured to me when watching that I enjoyed the unraveling of Larry’s life. I was also intrigued by the “mentaculus” and its possibilities.

The ending of the film was dark, despite the abundant humor that preceeded it, but in view of Ethan Coen’s off-Braodway work as of late in ALMOST AN EVENING and OFFICES, I will say I’m not surprised. Stuhlbarg was excellent, agreed. This is perhaps the brothers’s most philosophical works, and methinks one of their best films, period, as much as it’s absolutely contemplative and difficult to acess (as you note) Nonetheless, you’ve done a fine job here Phillip, and the four-and-a-half star rating is pretty much dead on. By any barometer of measurement, this is one of the best films of 2009, a contention I made in past weeks here at Movie Zeal when discussing BRIGHT EYES and THE MAID.
