Theater Releases for May 30th, 2008

By Luke Harrington

And summer continues with a whimper…

Sex and the City
Why should I try to write a summary of this film, when The Simpsons has already done it for me? “It’s about four straight women that act like gay men.” Ah, brevity is the soul of wit.

Recommended if you liked the HBO series. Seriously, somebody must have liked it, right? It got decent ratings, and stuff…

.

The Strangers
“INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS!!!”
Yeah, okay, so is anyone still impressed when studios claim that about movies? I guess they figure, “It worked for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre…twice.” Here are the “true events” this movie is based on, I kid you not (this is straight off the official website): “On the night of February 11, 2005, Kristen McKay and James Hoyt left a friend’s wedding reception and returned to the Hoyt family summer home. The brutal events that took place there have never been revealed.” In case you weren’t paying attention, that means they just made up a bunch of scary crap, and then gratuitously used it to bring back painful memories for this couple’s families. Thanks, Hollywood. You guys rock.

Recommended if you liked The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, or The Hills Have Eyes

Ugh, totally agree on the ‘INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS’ business. The Blair Witch Project got to do it successfully, but that was the first–and last–time that it actually worked.

On second thought, they keep using it, and marketing isn’t a field that tends to repeat it’s mistakes ad nauseum. My guess is that the gimmick still works its charms on the below average IQ of the American moviegoing public. I know Americans aren’t stupid people, but they’re practically lobotomized when it comes to their filmgoing habits.

Liv Tyler seems to be making a bit of a comeback what with this and The Incredible Hulk in a few weeks.

On a side note, she has lips bigger than mine … and that’s really saying somethin’.

Gotta say, I love the MZ theater release bits every week. Count me out of either of these. Thankfully I get The Fall.

Guess you guys don’t know what it’s like to be a single female. ‘Sex’ lets women forget about their dull average depressing lives and feel like they are living Carrie or Sam’s life.

On the other side, a slasher flick is a slasher flick is a slasher flick.

Come on. Let’s get some unique scripts out there instead of remakes or comic book adaptations.

Okay, sure…but I’d much rather promote entertainment that will inspire people to lead better lives, rather than just allowing them to “escape” for an hour or two.

    Amen to that, Luke.
