You're right about this being a musical, although the cues are so subtle as to take that distinction right over your head. I enjoyed the sumptuous atmosphere this film envelopes you in, from the music to the cinematography to the eclectic performances. It is one of their finest films, although like wine, it ages better with time.

This may be my favorite Coen Brothers picture, and I'm thrilled to see that you gave it such an appreciative, positive review. I hadn't made the association between Clooney's performance and Cary Grant's in "Arsenic and Old Lace," but that is dead-on.
